This has been the hottest summer in the Philippines so far, I think. It feels like we're being punished with humidity. To help us survive the summer heat I made a batch of wicked Oreos for my family and a Nutella milkshake for me!
What are wicked Oreos? Also known as fried Oreos, they're this sinful dessert which I got to try from Flaming Wings, a popular wings restaurant in Manila. The dessert is made with Oreos wrapped in pancake batter, deep fried to crispy goodness, and topped with vanilla ice cream. You had me at deep fried *dies*.

Next time I'm using double-stuffed Oreos |
To make things easy boxed pancake mix can be used. But since we don't usually have boxed pancake mix around at home I made the pancake mix from scratch. I followed Alton Brown's homemade pancake mix from his show Good Eats.
The mix makes fluffy pancakes so the wicked Oreos came out a bit puffy. Crispy outside and fluffy inside. Nom!
I only had around 2/3 of a pack of Oreos because my sister already ate the rest, so I had a lot of pancake batter to spare. You can make regular pancakes with remaining batter or you can do what I did and made fried pancake balls instead. No more Oreo cookie surprise inside, but they still tasted good!
I used a small, deep pot for frying the Oreos to a nice golden brown. Remember not to crowd the pan so the temperature of the oil doesn't drop. I only get to fry around 4-5 pieces at a time because the pot is small.
Wicked Oreos a.k.a. Fried Oreos
Flour, sifted | 2 cups |
Baking soda | 1/2 teaspoon |
Baking powder | 1 teaspoon |
Salt | 1/3 tablespoon |
Sugar | 2/3 tablespoon |
Eggs, separated | 2 |
Buttermilk / plain yogurt | 2 cups |
Butter, melted | 4 tablespoons or 1/2 stick |
Oreo cookies | 15-20 cookie sandwiches |
Vegetable cooking oil (I used canola) | For deep frying |
Cocoa powder | For serving |
Chocolate syrup | For serving |
Vanilla ice cream, or whatever flavor you want | For serving |
- Place Oreos in the freezer for 1-2 hours (this allows the cookies to stay intact and still crunchy when dipped in the pancake batter and deep fried).
- Prepare the pancake mix:
- Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a big bowl. Mix until thoroughly combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg whites & the buttermilk/yogurt.
- In another bowl, mix together egg yolks & melted butter.
- Combine the egg mixtures and whisk together until thoroughly combined.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and whisk together until just combined. No need to work out lumps.
- Place around 2-3 inches of cooking oil in a deep pot. Place over med-high heat.
- Test oil by dropping a bit of pancake batter into the oil. If it "bubbles" or gets fried immediately, then it is ready.
- Drop Oreo cookies in the batter. Using a spoon coat each one with a good amount of batter.
- Carefully place the coated cookies in the hot oil and fry each side until golden brown. Don't crowd the pan.
- Place fried Oreos on a paper towel or a sieve to let the excess oil drip.
- Serve immediately with a scoop (or two...or three) of ice cream, topped with whatever toppings you want (cocoa powder, powdered sugar, chocolate syrup, etc.)

That piece on the right is giving me an evil smile |
|
Lovely |
To wash it all down I made a Nutella milkshake, too!
|
Nutella, mmmmm...=P |
I was too excited to have this that I didn't really measure the ingredients that I put in. It tasted awesome! Definitely something I'll be making again soon (since we still have some Nutella left).
I was supposed to blend the toasted marshmallows along with the rest of the ingredients, but I forgot to (lol). So I just used it as a topping.
Nutella Milkshake
Milk | around 1 cup |
Nutella | 2 heaping spoonfulls (or more, if you love it so much) |
Ice | around 1 cup |
Vanilla ice cream | 3 scoops |
Toasted marshmallows | Optional, for topping |
- Place all ingredients in the blender.
- Blend on low for a few seconds, until ice has been crushed.
- Blend on high for around 20 seconds, until thick and creamy.
- Taste and adjust to liking. Add ice cream to make it thicker. Add more milk or ice to make it less thick. Add more Nutella to make it more Nutella-ey.

Look at that...*drools* |
Next time I'm going to try blending in the toasted marshmallows to see how that would taste like. Maybe I'll add a banana or some strawberries, too.

I burned the marshmallows, haha |
